Airlines are required to recognize dogs as service animals and accept them for transport on flights to, within, and from the United States. Airlines, though not required, are free to transport other species for passengers if they choose to do so.
Airlines can determine whether an animal is a service animal or a pet by:
⊛ Asking an individual with a disability if the animal is required to accompany them because of a disability and what work or task the animal has been trained to perform; Personal information about the individual's disability may not be required;
⊛ Looking for physical indicators such as the presence of a harness or a vest;
⊛ Looking to see if the animal is harnessed, leashed, or otherwise tethered; and
⊛ Observing the behavior of the animal.
(1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
(2) What specific work or tasks has the dog been trained to perform?
U.S. Airlines may require:
(1) a U.S. DOT form attesting to the animal’s health, behavior, and training; and
(2) a U.S. DOT form attesting that the animal can either not relieve itself or can relieve itself in a sanitary manner if the animal will be on a flight that is 8 hours or more.
Airlines are not permitted to require other documentation from service animal users except for documentation to comply with the requirements on the transport of animals by a Federal agency, a U.S. territory, or a foreign jurisdiction.
Canadian Airlines may require:
(1) An Airline Service Animal Form;
(2) A Canadian International Health Certificate and proof of vaccination for the animal; You should always carry its training certificate with you.
U.K.Airlines:
U.K. airlines may accept your Guide Dog's or Assistance Dog's ID book as pre-flight booking documentary evidence that your dog is trained by a recognized training organization, including an ID tag on the dog’s collar, harness, or jacket, helping to confirm the dog’s status as being trained by a recognized organization.
⊛ Airlines may deny transport to a service dog if the airline requires to be completed service animal forms and the service animal user does not provide the airline with these forms.
⊛ Airlines are permitted to deny transport to a service dog if it violates safety or other requirements. Find out more at Session 3 in this training program.

The chapter discusses the essential skills that service dogs should have when traveling through an airport. The requirements for service dogs on the premises of the airport as well as onboard are discussed at length. The lesson focuses on training service dogs in three fundamental skills: "Sit," Name Recognition, and Settling Down Quietly for Long Periods. Additionally, the "Wait" skill is an essential command that can teach the dog how to exercise control. Mastering the basics will help in preventing disruptive behavior.
The stress of air travel can be reduced for both owners and animals with the help of service dogs that are trained to assist with air travel. Before training a dog, owners should ensure their pet is comfortable being in a small space, such as the underside of an airplane seat, comfortable with the noise and commotion of an airport, comfortable being handled by strangers, and is up-to-date on all of its vaccinations. This lesson discusses the skills your dog needs to have for onboard the aircraft as well as the factors that will affect your dog's comfortable experience at the airport, the security check, and onboard the aircraft. The session includes training for the "back up" skill which can come in very handy when you need to make room for other passengers to move.
Our Travel Checklist will help you determine what type of documents you need for your flight, health certificates, and vaccinations. Our experts talk about the Service Dog Relief Attestation Form, the DOT Service Animal Air Travel Form, vaccinations, breed characteristics to consider, and health certificates, We talk about the airline policies you need to keep in mind and help you figure out how to fill out your travel forms. The chapter includes references to the best airlines to use to travel with a service dog and their animal policies. The chapter discusses air travel in the US, the UK, and Canada as well as the definitions of service dogs in these countries.
At the end of each training session, our tutor team will conduct an online evaluation of your training progress. You will be asked to complete a quiz and submit photos and videos of your dog performing specific tasks and exhibiting proper public behaviors. This method of continual assessment ensures that your personal trainer can consistently monitor your training progress, provide you with assistance throughout the course, and prepare you for final certification and public testing.
