Sweating is a natural function of your body to help you cool off after a workout or help you cope with the summer heat. However that is not the only way to cool down, it is not even the most common way to cool your body in the animal kingdom. Sweating is an ability that is developed only in primates and equines (horses). Different species have evolved different strategies.

How does your dog cool off? Does your dog sweat like you do? The Canis lupus familiaris, commonly known as the domestic dog, has sweat glands but they work differently compared to those in humans. Keep reading to learn more!

How Do Dogs Sweat?

After a long jog, an intensive workout, or physically demanding labor, your body will inevitably be covered in sweat, which evaporates and helps you cool down. At this point, you might be looking for the nearest shower and a glass of cold water. However, your dog does it differently. Your dog’s fur is acting as an insulating layer against the heat and cold but it is not enough to keep their optimal body temperature.

The canine sweat glands are located on their paws and they are called—Merocrine glands. Why are they there? Well, it is simple really. The paws usually have as little fur as possible compared to the rest of your furry friend’s body which facilitates easier evaporation. You might have already noticed that your house floor is wet when your dog passes you by during the summer months. The sweat evaporates from the less hairy paw pads and aids your four-legged partner in cooling down. However, sweating alone may not be sufficient to help your dog cool off.

Sweating is not an effective way for dogs to cool themselves which is why they need your help. Please, check our article “Beating the Heat: How to Keep Your Dogs Cool and Safe”.

Does Dog Sweat Smell?

There is hardly anyone, who is not familiar with the smell of a wet dog. However, you may be surprised to learn that dog sweat is actually odorless. The reason is that evaporation occurs very quickly, and the amount of liquid evaporated is not significant.  Humans, on the other hand, have to deal with bacteria living on our bodies that feed on our sweat, which can cause unpleasant odors.

Strategies to Cool Off

Your dog will also use panting as a way to thermoregulate themselves. Panting allows dogs to quickly inhale, humidify, and then exhale air. This increases the evaporation of water from their snouts and lungs.

You may notice your paw friend seeking shade on hot days and lying down on the ground to cool off more effectively. Dog owners can help their furry family members cope with very hot days by preparing various treats for them. You are welcome to check our article “Healthy Summer Treats for Your Dog”.

Remember to make sure your dog has access to fresh water, shade, and (if possible) air conditioning. If your home is not equipped with an air conditioner and lacks good insulation you could drop a few ice cubes in your pooch’s water bowl as well as use a household fan to make yourselves more comfortable.
